WHAT SMART WALLS ARE WEARING

What if we like art, enjoy going to galleries and museums, admired work that we saw in someone’s home or have a few pieces of art that we have collected, and that is the extent of our art knowledge. Below is a brief overview of art terminologies that will be helpful, not only in selecting art for your collection but understanding more about the art world. So, what is art? It is thef inished work ofan artist who expresses imagination or creativity, that which presents a feeling, mood or tells a story, using many forms of materials and mediums. When viewing art as opposed to other forms of “creative art”, paintings can evoke one’s own story, will, imagery and imagination by invading the soul and can be delivered in one glance or from long term concentration.

Artist/owner of The West End Contemporary Art Gallery, Dan Houston’s primary work is that of an abstract expressionist. Houston studied at the prestigious Cooper Union School of Art and the School of Visual Art, during this period of academia he was being schooled to focus on becoming a fine artist with an emphasis on realism. Nonetheless, this was during the mid 60’s when abstract expressionism was at its peak and was apparently a subliminal influence, will explain, and keep reading. As a requirement to visit and study works at the many museums and galleries in NYC, as well several of the current great artists of the day were guest instructors and lecturers at the school. Fast forward, this deep spiritual, soulful influence surfaced, much to his surprise as he began to delve into a creative side that he was not necessarily aware of. A true internal feeling of creating abstract expressionism simply flowed from his thoughts and feelings (spurred on by the influence of the jazz masters who also hung and performed out in NYC) to the canvas. Though he is trained in all aspects of art; he is most comfortable with this expression of art.

GLOSSARY:

  • GICLEE REPRODUCTION: Giclee is French meaning “to spatter out” refers to the process of how ink is applied to canvas or paper using a high resolution large format printer.

The most accurate art reproductions are printed on high quality canvas (and are more expensive) using archival pigmented inks. Research has indicated that Giclee prints endure for many years, (as long as 200 years). Giclee prints are museum quality reproductions providing the most accurate print that will retain the color variation, which makes them museum quality reproductions.

It is the finest process available to the visual artist because Giclee printing is able to capture all the nuances of the entire image: the richness and depth of color, the subtleties of highlights and tonal details held in delicate shadows.

  • LIMITED EDITIONS & EMBELLISHMENT: The artist signs copies of art and the number of the prints is indicated usually by the artist. Often artist will hand embellish the art, which makes the copy personalized and to become an original in its own right.

  • STRETCHED CANVAS: Canvas material is stretched and secured over a wood frame.

  • TRIPTYCH: A set of 3 artistic works, usually 1 painting divided into 3 sections.

  • DIPTYCH: A set of 2 artistic works usually divided into 2 sections.
